Phase 2 Launches on Fulton Streetscape Modernization

Elected officials and West Loop stakeholders joined Monday for the groundbreaking on the second phase of the Fulton Market Streetscape Project, which will improve pedestrian safety and upgrade the infrastructure on the historic corridor from Carpenter Street to Ogden Avenue.

Work on the project’s first phase, from Halsted to Carpenter, was completed last November.

In cooperation with Ald. Walter Burnett, the modernization plan was developed with input from the West Loop Community Organization and the Department of Planning and Development. It’s intended to make the neighborhood more pedestrian-friendly, while preserving its historic character.

“The Fulton Market Streetscape Project has already provided a safer environment for pedestrians and added to the vibrancy of the neighborhood,” said Burnett.

Originally designed as Chicago’s main food market, the Fulton District has become a tech industry hub. It got a further boost last year with the opening of the new global headquarters of McDonald’s.
