Penn Station Will Get New Main Entrance

Construction is scheduled to begin next month on the new main entrance to Penn Station, to be located at 33rd Street and 7th Avenue. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the project would eliminate congestion by doubling customer access and egressing capacity to the station’s Long Island Rail Road level when it is completed in 2020.

Cuomo also announced that the overall Penn Station redevelopment master plan, including the creation of the Moynihan Train Hall, continues to move forward.

The original Penn Station, demolished in 1963 and replaced in 1968, “was one of the great railroad stations of the world, but now it’s not fit for the greatest city in the nation,” Cuomo said. “That’s why we are creating a world class train hall at Moynihan.”

He added the new main entrance would be “a gateway to a world-class facility. This is not a proposal—we are getting to work now.”
