Patriotism, Religion, Children are Less Important, Survey Finds

According to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey, younger generations are ranking patriotism, religion and having children as less important today, than young people indicated two decades ago.

Both generations said hard work was the most important. However, people under the age of 50 face changing priorities, with the importance of patriotism falling by 9 percentage points, religion decreasing by 12 percentage points and having children dropping 16 percentage points from 1998.

While a majority of Americans indicated they were very or somewhat satisfied with the economy, two-thirds indicated they aren’t confident the next generation will be better off than the current one. The majority also rated tolerance for others as an important personal value.

Republican pollster Bill McInturff joined forces with Jeff Horwitt, Democratic pollster, to conduct the survey. “In America, it’s the emerging generation that calls the shots about where the country is headed, Horwitt told the Wall Street Journal.
