Parks & Rec Board Endorses Park Master Plan

Austin’s Parks and Recreation Board unanimously approved a master plan for the 3,700-acre Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park on the metro’s east side. The new plan envisions development of a marina, event lawn, planetarium and even a Ferris wheel, at an estimated $800 million price tag.

The city’s largest park, on Decker Lane and Decker Lake Roads, is no stranger to plans; for years, ideas and designs have been issued for the largely undeveloped space, including a golf course addition. However, in recent years, and with community input, other ideas have been introduced. Specifically, the project’s first phase, encompassing 272 acres, would emphasize improved access to Lake Walter E. Long.

The next step in the master plan is approval by the city, as well as figuring out how to finance the project. The city’s parks department is looking at bond money, and also acknowledges private partners would need to contribute.
