The Portland Historic Landmarks Commission approved plans for a five-story office building that will be the city’s first certified-living building. The PAE Living Building is a proposed 58,700-square-foot mixed-use project in Portland’s Skidmore/Old Town Historic District.
Living Building Challenge certification requires net-zero water and energy efficiency. Energy needs will be met via on-site solar sources, while daylighting, triple-paned glazing and other features will save energy. Water features include tapping stormwater, and wastewater sources, as well as use of a 50,000-gallon cistern, composting toilets, and urine diversion for fertilizer generation.
The building design matches the district’s classic 19th century Italianate style, and will feature cross-laminated timber framing, textured brick veneer cladding, custom finished aluminum panels, and ground-level aluminum storefronts on retail space along Southwest First Avenue and Pine Street. Upper floors will contain office space.
The project team includes developer Gerding Edlen, PAE Consulting Engineers, which also claimed three floors, as well as ZGF Architects. Completion is anticipated in 2021.
