Pacific Waterfront Proposes $383M Redevelopment of San Francisco’s Piers 38 and 40
Pacific Waterfront Partners’ proposed $383-million redevelopment of San Francisco’s Piers 38 and 40 in South Beach won favor with the San Francisco Port Commission. Port staff recommended the San Francisco-based developer’s plan to turn the piers into a waterfront playground and community market. The project is under review by the Port with a formal vote expected next month to begin negotiations with the developer.
The project is envisioned as a destination for families to engage in water-oriented recreation as well as a place that is open and accessible to the Bay Area’s diverse population and visitors. Pacific Waterfront Partners wants to create a youth sailing center and marina area on the north side of Pier 38 to help activate the Brannan Street Wharf.
The developer would also expand and improve existing facilities into a “water-oriented transportation hub” for water taxis, ferries and tour boats. It would also transform a parking lot at Pier 40 and the Pier 38 bulkhead along the Embarcadero into a flexible covered public area for year-round activities.
