Overture! to Rise as New Beacon on C Street
April 5, 2017
Beverly Hills-based Sloan Capital Partners received unanimous approval from the San Diego City Council to demolish the California Theatre in order to develop a 40-story, $120-million residential tower at Fourth Avenue and C Street called Overture!.
The proposed project would rise 422 feet and contain 282 apartments or condo units, 11,000 square feet of retail space and have 325 parking spaces. Elements from the 1920’s-era 2,200-seat movie palace will be restored and reinstalled, such as the original marquee and corner blade sign.
A rooftop observation deck and club lounge are planned for Overture!, as well as an art installation on C Street depicting the building’s historic moments.
The demolition phase will span roughly six months, and construction is slated to start early next year. The project is expected to open by 2020.
