Oregon Surpasses Housing Goal Set in 2019
Back in 2019, the state of Oregon set a goal of having 25,000 affordable housing units in the pipeline by 2023. Officials had given themselves five years to reach the ambitious goal, and last month the Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS) and homebuilders officially surpassed the 25,000-unit goal, reported the Portland Business Journal.
Now, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek is raising the bar through an executive order to build 36,000 market-rate and affordable homes per year.“Thirty-six thousand is a large number, and a few years ago, 25,000 was a large number,” said Andrea Bell, OHCS director.
Bell also highlighted the more than $1 billion toward housing that came out of the 2023 Legislature. “The work incumbent upon this agency, and really all of us that are working in housing, is to ensure that we have $1.1 billion worth of positive change,” she said per the outlet.
