Oregon Lawmakers Advance $200M Housing Measures
The Oregon House has advanced legislation to build more affordable housing and help people who are on the verge of homelessness. According to the Daily Journal of Commerce, House Bills 2001 and 5019 would dedicate $200 million for the construction of affordable housing and to help address the homelessness situation.
Under the legislation, cities with populations of over 10,000 would be required to build enough affordable units to house people at a certain income level. In addition, the package also devotes $25 million to address youth homelessness, $20 million to help build modular housing, $3 million for developers looking to construct affordable properties, and $27 million to help rural counties address homelessness.
The bills are now headed to the Democratic-controlled senate, where they are likely to pass. While some Republicans have expressed concern that the legislation takes away local control, many voiced support, calling it an opportunity to move forward.
