Orange County Boasts U.S.’s Lowest Female Unemployment Rate
March is International Women’s Month, and today is International Women’s Day. The importance of those occasions is reflected in new research by JLL. The firm found that Orange County owns the lowest female employment rate among top five most-populated counties in the U.S.
Over the last five years, Orange County’s female unemployment has decreased from 8.7% to 5.3%. In the county, the professions with the largest female employment levels are office and administrative support, sales, management and education occupations.
Women’s annual earnings in the county have also improved, and, adjusting for inflation, 34.4% of the total employed population making $65,000 a year or greater is female. In 2012, women made up 30.1% of this income group.
JLL’s Paulina Torres says, “Women’s status in the area of employment and earnings has continued to progress in Orange County. Because women comprise over half of the student population in local universities, and the number of women in the county with a bachelor’s degree or greater continues to increase, we can expect continued advances in female employment and earnings in Orange County.”
Across the U.S., total female nonfarm employment has increased by 17% since the turn of the century, reports JLL, a rate that is 12.2% higher than the overall gain in the prime working age population (25 to 54 years). During the past 18 years, the greatest overall growth in female employment has been in the education and healthcare sector. More recently, the construction sector has experienced the largest percentage increase in both five-year and one-year terms.
