Ontario Airport Surpasses Atlanta as Nation’s Busiest Cargo Hub
A survey by FreightWaves ranked Ontario International Airport as the nation’s busiest for outbound shipments in October, surpassing Atlanta. The report showed 4.63% of all goods shipped by American airports were handled by planes taking off at Ontario.
Atlanta, which had been the market leader for most of 2018, recorded an outbound tally of 4.51%.
Since the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) took local control over the airport two years ago, year-to-year air freight volume has increased sharply. In the first nine months of the year, 521,705 tons of freight volume moved through the airport, an 18% increase over the same period in 2017.
OIAA’s Mark Thorpe says, “Much of the seaborne cargo which moves through the Los Angeles-Long Beach harbor complex and then carried to the Inland Empire by truck and train is trans-shipped through Ontario’s extensive warehouse industry to eastward destinations, making the city a key point in the nation’s transportation network.”
