One Year of Mandatory Inclusionary Zoning

Mayor Bill de Blasio took a victory lap on the one-year anniversary of New York City’s Mandatory Inclusionary Housing (MIH), which requires development to build permanently affordable housing in areas zoned for growth.
Eleven apartment developments have been approved under the program. Nine of those are 100% affordable developments built with affordable housing subsidies, in neighborhoods of Queens, the Bronx and Upper Manhattan. Two will mix affordable housing with luxury apartments: 141 Willoughby Street in Brooklyn, and 550 Washington Street in Manhattan.
“By ensuring the development of affordable housing is not just mandatory, but permanently affordable, MIH enables us to provide long-term housing solutions for more New Yorkers at a wide range of incomes,” said Eric Enderlin, president of the City’s Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
