One of Nation’s Largest Cross-Laminated Timber Buildings Tops Out in Spokane

McKinstry’s Catalyst building, part of the company’s South Landing development in Spokane, WA, officially topped out this week. The development team, which also includes Avista, Katerra and Eastern Washington University, gathered with local and statewide business, community and elected leaders to commemorate the construction milestone.

Scheduled to open in spring 2020, the five-story, 159,000-square-foot building will soon deliver the city’s first zero energy and zero carbon facility. Catalyst will feature the latest smart building technologies and energy systems, including solar photovoltaics (PV), solar shading, exhaust heat recovery, thermal energy and battery storage systems and a near-passive house building envelope.

The project at 501 East Sprague Ave. is being built using locally-sourced cross-laminated timber produced by Katerra. Catalyst will be one of the largest CLT buildings in the nation. Eastern Washington University will be the anchor tenant, housing more than 1,000 students and 50 faculty.
