San Diego Unified Port District staff recommended San Diego-based OliverMcMillan be selected to redevelop 57 acres on Harbor Island. The proposed $1-billion project includes a mix of hotels, restaurants, retail, attractions, pedestrian pathways, a meandering canal and waterfront recreation areas.
Three hotels will be developed in partnership with Evans Hotels on the eastern portion of Harbor Island. One property will include as many as 1,100 rooms, another boutique property will have with up to 400 rooms, and a third “boatel” will provide affordable lodging on the waterfront with 350 to 400 rooms.
The plan also includes offices for port HQ and harbor police, an ocean-related research facility, an arts facility, plazas and a public market. The design includes an exhibit for sea plans, which were once built and launched from the site.
