O’Hare, Midway Airports Expect High Volume of Fliers Over Memorial Day Weekend

Chicago’s airports—O’Hare International on the North Side and Midway International on the South Side—are expected to see more than 1.4 million travelers between Thursday, May 26, and Tuesday, May 31, based on projections from airline carriers. O’Hare is expecting an increase of 47.4% over the same period last year, while Midway anticipates a 5% increase, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

“For the first summer in three years, Chicago can comfortably welcome millions of visitors from around the globe to the quintessential events that define our city,” said Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot.

Airlines expect full flights amid strong demand by leisure travelers because many of them put off flying during the COVID-19 pandemic, Crain’s Chicago Business reported. However, leisure travelers are likely to find that they’re paying more this year: The average one-way leisure fare is up 52% from 2019 to $273, according to Harrell Associates.
