O’Hare Airport Set for Significant Terminal Expansion
Major air carriers have reached an agreement with the administration of Mayor Rahm Emanuel to significantly expand Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport’s passenger terminals. The airport expansion, likely to cost billions of dollars, will lead to nine new gates by 2019, and possibly dozens more in a new terminal a few years later.
The expansion will be in two phases. First, Terminal 5, which serves international flights, will expand by nine gates, bringing the total to 33. The $300 million project will be funded with O’Hare’s existing revenues and passenger seat charges.
The second phase will focus on the demolition of Terminal 2, O’Hare’s oldest, built more than 50 years ago. Aviation commissioner Ginger Evans said Terminal 2 could be completed within the next decade, with replacement gates open in five to seven years.
