Officials to San Antonio: No Rail for Multi-Modal Transit Plan

Officials with San Antonio and Bexar County ruled out any chance of rail being included in the region’s proposed multi-modal transit plan that could be on the voter ballot in 2019. Leaders said they considered rail an outdated mode of transportation, one for which the federal government isn’t providing much funding.

According to Mayor Ron Nirenberg, a vote is being called to garner a mandate. The plan itself is expected to include dedicated rights-of-way for set, trackless routes to be serviced by mass-transit vehicles.

“What’s extraordinary about this situation is we have the chance to use future-proof technology — trackless transit that is scalable to ridership demands, that is cost-effective to cover the expansiveness of our geography, and also, again, is an opportunity to be an adopter of advanced technology,” Nirenberg said.
