Officials Break Ground on Belt Junction Rail Flyover
Government and rail industry officials held a ceremonial groundbreaking recently on the 75th Street Corridor Improvement Project, a $474-million freight and passenger rail improvement project in the South Side’s Auburn Gresham, West Chatham and Englewood neighborhoods. It’s part of the $4.4-billion Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) Program, and aims to reduce congestion in the nation’s busiest rail corridor.
Among other improvements, the 75th Street CIP will add a rail flyover, thereby eliminating the region’s most congested chokepoint, Belt Junction, where 30 commuter trains and 98 freight trains cross paths each day. When the CIP is completed, it will eliminate an estimated 18,500 hours of rail passenger delay per year.
“For too long, congestion and delays have defined transportation and commerce throughout the Chicagoland area,” said U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth. With the CIP, “we’re taking a step toward ensuring that our rail system is as efficient as Illinoisans deserve.”
