Off-Site Construction: Growing in Popularity?

Though the U.S. construction industry has been hesitant to embrace off-site, or modular, construction, the need is becoming greater than the resistance. To that end, the industry is dealing with a gap in its skilled-labor channel, and the need to complete more projects, more quickly.

Construction Dive recently listed five trends that could shape the future of off-site construction, one of which is today’s productivity needs. Here are the other four trends to look for:

  • More general contractors are partnering with prefab manufacturers.
  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) and early collaboration are becoming important.
  • More major companies will start to look off-site for help.
  • Early adopters will turn to education to boost off-site interest.

A 2014 report from the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) found 93% of respondents used off-site methods to some degree. Respondents said the main benefits were project timeline reductions and cost effectiveness.
