Odessa, TX; Home of a . . . Nuclear Reactor?
The Odessa City Council recently approved a resolution to support a project proposed by University of Texas-Permian Basin (UTPB). The proposed project is a $1 billion nuclear power reactor in Ector County. The resolution authorizes an agreement between UTPB and X-Energy, a Maryland company developing a non-emission nuclear reactor that produces energy and less greenhouse gas than other reactors.
If the reactor receives the many approvals necessary, it would be the first of its kind in the United States. The X-Energy reactor core doesn’t contain water, meaning no chance of a meltdown.
The next step, according to UTPB president David Watts, is to find the right property. UTBP and X-Energy will conduct a geological study to search out the land.
