Obama Earmarks $125M For OC Streetcar
A proposed 4.15-mile streetcar between Santa Ana and Garden Grove moved closer to staying on track, as part of President Obama’s $4.1-trillion budget released this week. The budget included $125-million earmarked for the OC Streetcar, roughly half of the $289-million the Orange County Transportation Authority says the project will cost.
If approved by Congress in the fall, the Federal Transportation Administration will be called on to consider a full-funding grant agreement with OCTA, as part of the New Starts program.
The planned streetcar will run from the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center through downtown Santa Ana, and to a new multimodal transit hub at the eastern edge of Garden Grove. Construction would begin in late 2017 for service starting in 2020.
