Obama Center Project Clears Approvals Hurdle

The Chicago Plan Commission voted in favor of building the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park after seven hours of public debate, according to published reports. Although opponents of the project raised objections ranging from a loss of parkland to the Obama Foundation’s refusal to sign a community benefits agreement, the commission signed off on the plan.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who served as chief of staff in the Obama administration, voiced his approval of the vote. “The Obama Presidential Center will not just create jobs, but create future leaders, and be an incredible economic, educational and cultural benefit to our great city,” he said. “We are looking forward to next week’s City Council vote, and the future of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.”

Up next is a vote by the Zoning Board, and then consideration by the full City Council.
