Obama Center Groundbreaking Set for Tuesday

The long-awaited groundbreaking for the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side, delayed partly  by court challenges from preservation groups, is set for Sept. 28, the Obama Foundation announced.

Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are slated to attend the Tuesday afternoon ceremony, as are Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.

Chicago is “where I got my start in public service” and “where Michelle and I started our family,” Obama said in a video posted to the Obama Foundation website.

Its cost now estimated at $830 million, the Obama Center will be built on 19 acres in Jackson Park. The project has been touted as a driver for economic revitalization of the area by sources ranging from local aldermen to multifamily sales brokers, who have seen a rise in transaction volume in neighborhoods surrounding the site.
