Oakland’s Historic Palace Theater to Become Charter School
The 100-year-old Palace Theater on 23rd Avenue in Oakland, CA has been sold to Bay Tech Charter School and will serve as a new location for the academic institution. Newmark’s Shawn Klein, in collaboration with Haley Klein of Maven Properties represented the buyer in the $2.2 million transaction.
Originally built in 1923 for vaudeville performances, the Palace Theater transitioned to a movie house in 1931 and then became a church between 1953 and 2013. The building continued to serve as an events and church space until Bay Tech’s acquisition.
“We are thrilled to be a part of the growing educational sphere that surrounds Oakland,” said Shawn Klein. “The Palace Theater’s redevelopment plans are outlined to create a highly unique and personalized learning space for Bay Tech’s students.”
Bay Tech plans a building renovation to include a gym, classrooms and offices, while retaining much of the building’s historic architecture. The project is scheduled for completion in Fall 2024.
