NYC’s Youngest Landmark

In January, first-floor interiors at the United Nations Hotel became the youngest historic landmark in New York City, according to a designation from the City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

“These unique spaces represent some of the best and most well-preserved interiors in the style and aesthetic of the 1970s and 80s,” said Meenakshi Srinivasan, chair of the Commission. The hotel lobby, entrance foyer and the hotel’s Ambassador Grill at 1 and 2 United Nations Plaza in Manhattan are all included in the designation.

Located in a windowless room at the rear of the building, the Ambassador Grill has mirrored walls and a dramatic, vaulted faux skylight, which is backed by illuminated mylar panels. It opened in 1976.
