NYC’s First Soccer-Specific Stadium Breaks Ground at Willets Point

City officials and the New York City Football Club (NYCFC) broke ground on Etihad Park, New York’s first professional soccer-specific stadium and Major League Soccer’s (MLS) first fully electric stadium nationwide. The privately financed stadium, part of the Adams administration’s Willets Point Transformation plan, is slated to be operational by the 2027 MLS season.

“Along with cohosting the 2026 World Cup with New Jersey, this stadium puts us on the map as a world-class soccer destination, and it makes Willets Point the city’s premier sports hub,” said Mayor Eric Adams. The neighborhood is also home to Citi Field and the U.S. Tennis Association’s Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The groundbreaking on Etihad Park follows last December’s launch of construction on the first 880 units of a projected 2,500 affordable apartments at Willets Point. The project will also include a 250-key hotel, a 650-seat public school and more than 40,000 square feet of public open space.
