NYC Will Launch Local Production of COVID-19 Test Kits

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday that New York City would soon have manufacturing capacity to produce its own coronavirus testing kits locally. The new supply chain, which is expected to become available next month, comes on top of the city sourcing test kits from Aria Diagnostics in Carmel, IN.

“50,000 tests per week to begin, and if we can go farther, we’re going to build it up rapidly,” de Blasio said. He pointed out that the city didn’t have facilities to produce its own COVID-19 tests until the private and public sectors came together to figure out how to do it.

He emphasized that the city’s newly-developed capacity for manufacturing the tests “does not let the federal government off the hook.” He added, though, “Hopefully the example New York City is setting will be recognized in Washington” and lead to more widespread local production of tests nationwide.
