NYC Unveils $4B Plan to Repair City-Owned Stretch of Brooklyn-Queens Expressway

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Mike Flynn announced plans to rehabilitate the 1.5-mile city-owned portion of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street. The $4-billion project, is epxected to take 10 years and to break ground in 2030.

The infrastructure is 20 years past its design life and deteriorating under the weight of 130,000 vehicles every day, more than double the capacity for which it was designed, according to the mayor’s office. NYC DOT plans to build a temporary, two-level highway bypass on top of Furman Street, below the promenade, from Atlantic Avenue to Columbia Heights. “Time is up. We are fixing the triple cantilever,” Flynn said.

At the New York Building Congress, president and CEO Carlo A. Scissura said, “The sooner we can get a shovel in the ground to deal with the disastrous BQE before it completely fails, the better and safer this city will be. And so the Building Congress applauds Mayor Mamdani, Deputy Mayor Kerson, Commissioner Flynn and the entire administration for bringing a plan to the table that aims at relieving the worst section of the city’s worst highway in the least time possible. While many questions remain about construction and timeline, they are 100% right to start the clock now on action.”
