NYC to Redevelop 122-Acre BK Coastline to Maritime Port
New York City is revitalizing a 122-acre Brooklyn waterfront stretch into a mixed-use community and modern maritime port. Mayor Eric Adams announced the city’s control of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, facilitating its transformation with housing, retail, green spaces, and port facilities.
The city’s $80 million investment will stabilize and repair piers, with an additional $15 million for a new electrified container crane. NYCEDC will manage the terminal, aiming to grow container business, reduce truck traffic, and engage the community for amenities. Federal grants totaling over $350 million aim to modernize the terminal for international cargo handling and low-carbon freight movement.
The initiative includes creating on-site cold storage facilities and improving traffic flow. The Brooklyn Marine Terminal Taskforce will engage stakeholders for a shared vision, supported by acclaimed design firm WXY. This initiative aligns with Adams’ “Harbor of the Future” plan, complementing Governor Hochul’s economic growth goals.
