NYC on Pace for Another Tourism Record Despite Headwinds

In the face of headwinds buffeting international tourism, New York City is on pace for another record year. 2019’s projected 67 million visitors to the city, domestic as well as foreign, would be the highest annual tally on record, and up by nearly two million from 2018.

“We’re facing some headwinds economically and geopolitically, but we’re still on track for growth in 2019,” Fred Dixon, chief executive of NYC & Company, the city’s tourism marketing agency, told the New York Times. He acknowledged, though, that visitors had cut back on spending.

Dixon said 1.16 million visitors from China are expected this year, an increase of about 50,000 over 2018. And, despite turmoil over Brexit and the weakness of the British pound, the city anticipates a similar increase in UK visitors, Dixon said.

Those increases will offset the drop in visitors from South American countries with economies in turmoil, he added.
