NYC Council Speaker Johnson Calls for Indoor Dining to Resume
New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson on Wednesday called for indoor dining to resume, “with reduced capacity and clear guidance.” Restaurants have been barred from indoor seating since March, and City Comptroller Scott Stringer said about 1,300 of the city’s 25,000 restaurants and bars have closed during that time.
“This is crucial for restaurant owners, who have been particularly hard hit by the pandemic and the resulting drop in tourism,” Johnson said. Although outdoor seating is allowed, “Summer is winding down, and they need to begin planning for the colder months.”
He added, “The rest of the state has been allowed to reopen their restaurants for indoor dining, and New Jersey is allowing indoor dining come Friday. Now is the time to allow it in New York City.”
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo said earlier this week it was too soon to take that step.
