NYC Allocates $52M to Improve Public Hospital System

New York City’s public hospital system—NYC Heath + Hospitals/Metropolitan—will benefit from $52 million in capital investment projects. The investment will fund facility upgrades and infrastructure repairs. Some of the projects are scheduled for completion as soon as this spring, while others will require work through 2021.

NYC Heath + Hospitals/Metropolitan is the largest public hospital system in the nation. It has been an integral part of the East Harlem community since the 1950s, according to Alina Moran, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. It was the only hospital in New York City to receive an “A” grade twice in 2018 for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group.

The largest repairs/investments are:

• Upgrading the current emergency power system, as required under new mandates ($25 million)
• Replacing patient-accessible windows with new ones featuring polycarbonate glazing for enhanced safety in Behavioral Health units ($13 million)
• Bringing the automatic fire sprinkler infrastructure up to new requirements ($12 million)
