NY Tri-State Film & TV Sector Rebounds from 2023 Strikes

The New York Tri-State film and TV industry–arguably the birthplace of the sector more than 125 years ago–has rebounded from last year’s labor disputes, CBRE said in a new report. Currently there are 34 film and television projects in production in New York and New Jersey, the highest number since the third quarter of 2022.

The metro area has seen a 12% increase in stage inventory in 2024 year to date, due to the debut of Borden Studios in Long Island City, Wildflower Studios in Astoria and Grumman on Long Island. “Across the region, dozens of industrial properties of all shapes and sizes have been repurposed into production
space for the TV and film industry and have maintained steady demand as soundstage availability remains tight,” the report stated.

That being said, the report pointed out that “the increase in new supply and entrance of professional studio operators to the region could pose a competitive challenge for some of the city’s older stages in converted manufacturing buildings.”
