NY State Poised to Enact Rent Reform Package

With New York State’s current rent laws expiring on June 15, state Senate and Assembly leaders say they have the votes to pass a package of reforms. Following a closed-door meeting with Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins reportedly said they would work with the governor to get the bills passed before June 15.

In a recent joint statement, Heastie and Stewart-Cousins declared that “now that both legislative houses have concluded our hearings on New York’s rent laws, the Senate and Assembly majorities agree that in 2019 we will enact the strongest rent package ever.”

The Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) has questioned the direction that rent package appears to be taking. “What is needed is responsible rent reform that protects tenants while maintaining the quality of our housing stock,” REBNY said in testimony before an Assembly committee last month.

The Connect Apartments Conference will take place June 20, 2019 in Los Angeles. For more information, or to register, click here.
