NY State Lawmakers Enact “Aggressive” Climate Change Measures

New York State lawmakers have passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which will mandate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and increase the use of renewable energy to mitigate the effects of climate change. The measure now goes to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his signature.

Among other things, the bill will require the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation to issue regulations setting limits on greenhouse gas emissions, with the goal of reducing the emissions 85% by 2050. It also sets a requirement for 70% of electricity produced by state-regulated utilities to come from renewable energy sources.

In a statement, Cuomo said the legislation establishes “the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction mandate in the nation and, we believe, in the entire world.” He added that the state would continue to bolster green jobs initiatives “as we transition to a net zero emissions future.”
