NY State Jobs Hit New High; NYC Employment Slips
New York State added 7,900 private-sector jobs in February, bringing the total to 8,254,400 positions. That’s the highest level on record, according to the state Department of Labor.
Both the private sector and all nonfarm payrolls grew by 0.1% statewide in February, while remaining flat nationally. The statewide unemployment remained unchanged at 3.9%, although it increased by a percentage point to 4.2% in New York City while declining a point to 3.7% outside the city.
On a year-over-year basis, no metro area lost private-sector jobs, according to the Labor Department. Thirteen metro areas added jobs in the private sector; however, the state’s largest city was not the leader on a percentage basis, although in sheer numbers it led with 76,400 positions added Y-O-Y.
Syracuse was the fastest-growing metro area on a Y-O-Y basis, with a 2% increase. New York City had to settle for fifth place with 1.8% Y-O-Y growth.
