NY, NJ Governors Say COVID-19 Curves are Flattening

Despite new one-day highs in their states’ death tolls from the coronavirus, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said Wednesday the curves of infections appear to be flattening. The two states contain nearly half the country’s 431,000 known cases of COVID-19 as of early Thursday, and have seen more fatalities than the other 48 states combined.

The New York Times quoted Cuomo as saying the number of hospitalized virus patients increased 3% since Tuesday, the fifth consecutive day of increases below 10%. Previously, 25% daily increases were typical.

“That death toll probably will be this high, or near this high or even higher for the next several days,” Cuomo said. Yet, he added, “We are flattening the curve.”

In New Jersey, Murphy said the number of hospitalized patients grew by just nine people, to 7,026 from 7,017 on Tuesday.

To further limit the virus’ spread, Murphy ordered supermarket customers and employees to wear face masks. He also imposed a ban on nonessential construction, effective Friday.
