Now Available on Amazon: Hospital Room in a Box
Interested in buying a hospital room on Amazon? Now you can. A New York-based firm, EIR Healthcare, is now selling modular hospital rooms or “rooms in a box.” The rooms, dubbed MedModular, cost $814-per-square-foot on Amazon.com or $285,000 per-unit, which the company claims is less expensive than traditional construction. Rooms (pictured above) are fitted with a bed and bathroom, and are customizable.
According to EIR Healthcare, the firm’s target customers are hospitals and health systems. The firm’s CEO Grant Geiger said he’s seeing interest from hospitals in using the units for simulation labs and urgent care facilities. He also considers the military as a potential customer.
The hospital room in a box joins an ever-growing portfolio of medical-related products available on Amazon. Previously, hospitals and health systems purchased necessary items through group purchasing organizations, or GPOs, which provided discounts but lacked pricing transparency, according to Geiger. The CEO said he negotiated with Amazon’s medical products group for months before EIR Healthcare obtained permission to sell the hospital rooms on Amazon’s site.
