Northland Seeks Approval to Eliminate Offices from Newton Mixed-Use Project
Northland Investment Corp. is asking the Newton, MA City Council for permission to approve changes to a planned 23-acre mixed-use project, the Boston Business Journal reported. The revised plan calls for eliminating most of the project’s office space in favor of more residential.
Locally based Northland is also proposing the elimination of four small buildings in favor of a parking lot for retail customers, and a fifth building in favor of open space. In all, the changes would add 22 housing units to the project, on net, for a total of 822 homes. They leave only 5,000 square feet of medical offices, as well as just under 100,000 square feet of retail.
The developer originally won the council’s okay for the project in 2019, reported the Business Journal. Newton residents upheld that approval when project opponents forced a referendum in March 2020, just weeks before the pandemic upended the office market.
