Northlake’s Wisdom Village Wins Plaudits for Affordable Housing
Turnstone Development’s Wisdom Village of Northlake, a new senior housing complex in Northlake, IL, was recognized with the annual Gale Cincotta Award for Innovation and Excellence in Affordable Housing in metropolitan Chicago. The recognition came from the Illinois Housing Development Authority at the Illinois Governor’s Conference on Affordable Housing last month.
Designed for the 55 and older demographic, the six-story elevator building offers 71 mixed-income units. “There was a clear need for it in that location,” said Turnstone COO Sue Wiemer. “We had over 250 applicants on the waiting list.”
The property was previously zoned commercial, but was re-zoned to make way for senior housing. Northlake Mayor Jeffrey Sherwin said the planning of the project led to the creation of a new zoning classification for senior housing, which reduced the number of parking spaces mandated by the city and allowed the development to fit within site.
