Northeastern U. Breaks Ground on 1,215-Bed Dormitory Tower
Northeastern University has broken ground on 840 Columbus Ave., a 23-story dormitory that will house more than 1,200 students when completed in 2028. The new building is the second residence hall built as part of a partnership between the university, the City of Boston and developer American Campus Communities, a Blackstone portfolio company. It follows LightView, which opened in 2019.
One reason for building 840 Columbus is to turn over 500 units of university-owned off-campus housing to the rental apartment market. “Every student housed on campus is a unit freed up off campus,” Mayor Michele Wu said at the groundbreaking.
Along with 1,215 beds, the Elkus Manfredi-designed 840 Columbus will include 4,000 square feet of local retail space, 124,000 square feet of academic space and 18,000 square feet of community space. The project represents the completion of the on-campus housing obligations Northeastern outlined in its 2013 Institutional Master Plan.
