North Texas Tops in New Home Starts
The Dallas-Fort Worth area took top marks nationwide when it came to new housing starts, according to information from Metrostudy Inc. Home construction in the area totaled 34,523 units on an annualized basis. Houston came in second, with 30,206 starts, while Central Florida took third place with 28,000 home starts. Austin and San Antonio clocked in 16,674 (8th) and 12,277 (12th) starts, respectively.
However, consultants aren’t anticipating a large increase in North Texas starts for the remainder of 2019. Metrostudy’s Paige Shipp told the Dallas Morning News that starts are likely to be flat, or down by a percent or two, “mostly due to weather, the mortgage rate spike in 2018 and overall affordability issues.”
She added that, as DFW remains ahead of Houston by approximately 4,000 starts, the region should continue to hang onto the top slot.
