Nordstrom Says “Goodbye” After 31 Years in Downtown San Diego
Nordstrom has closed its doors in downtown San Diego’s Westfield Horton Plaza. The upscale retailer, which became a mainstay after opening 31 years ago for the cost of $18 million, was the last of the mall’s original department stores.
Westfield is buying back the 144,000-square-foot building, though has not yet decided the fate of the site. On the final day of operations, some 180 Nordstrom staff members and alumni gathered for a goodbye breakfast, wore “closing day” T-shirts, and handed out special cookies, while a DJ played music.
Horton Plaza, which was designed by the late L.A. architect Jon Jerde, arrived on the scene in 1985 as a ground-breaking “radical” outdoor retail environment. Original developer Hahn was criticized at the time for Horton’s fortress-like characteristics that guarded against the neighboring Gaslamp Quarter’s seedier elements.
