Nonprofit Reaches Agreement to Run Bronzeville Hospital Slated to Close

Nonprofit Insight Chicago has become the new owner at Mercy Hospital in Bronzeville and has reached an agreement with the city to operate it as a full-service hospital until at least 2029, the Chicago Tribune reported. Chicago’s first chartered hospital, the South Side facility had been slated to close before Insight Chicago acquired it for $1.

Insight is committed to stabilizing the hospital’s finances, restoring it as a teaching facility and ensuring the community is represented on its board, a spokeswoman told the Tribune. Insight, an affiliate of a Michigan healthcare system, will also periodically report to the city on its progress, she said.

Some community members opposed Insight’s plan to buy the hospital from Trinity Health, the Tribune reported. They had hoped the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, which approved the sale, would have given potential local buyers more time to make offers.
