No Surprise: AT&T-Time Warner Deal Faces Heavy Scrutiny

Within a day of AT&T Inc.’s announced $85 billion buy of Time Warner Inc., U.S. lawmakers and presidential candidates shared antitrust concerns, with both political parties on the same side of the issue.

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign indicated that a great deal more information about the proposed acquisition is necessary. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump flat out said he’d block it if he won the Nov. 8 Presidential Election. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle noted they plan an in-depth examination of the deal.

Though the U.S. Justice Department decides on whether the deal can move forward (as opposed to Congress or the President), the Senate subcommittee on antitrust said it plans a hearing on the issue before the end of the year.
