No More Dormancy in Amarillo’s CBD

A little more than a decade ago, Amarillo, TX’s downtown area was dormant, with little in the way of developments, leases or real estate projects occurring.

What a difference a decade makes. At this point, there are 16 ongoing or planned downtown commercial projects, valued at more than $150 million. That number is one more than the TOTAL number of downtown projects completed from 2011-2016. “This is the most development we’ve seen in downtown Amarillo in 60 years,” Amarillo National Bank’s Executive Vice President William Ware told the Amarillo Globe-News.

Center City Executive Director Beth Duke said the 2008 release of Amarillo’s Downtown Strategic Action Plan helped spur developer confidence in the CBD. “By adopting that plan, (the city) laid out a blueprint of what they hoped they could do,” Duke said to the Globe-News.
