New York Statewide Shutdown Extended to May 15
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday he was extending statewide restrictions and closures until May 15. The governor said the action prompted by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic was taken in consultation with other regional states and that the states will re-evaluate after this additional closure period.
“Unpausing New York and reopening our economy is going to be an ongoing process over the coming weeks that we’re working through with other states, but we have to do it in a way that doesn’t drive up the infection rate and create a second wave of the virus,” Cuomo said. “We have shown that we can control the spread of the virus, but we can’t now undo all the progress we’ve made.”
To that end, Cuomo also imposed a requirement that all New Yorkers wear face masks on public transit. It follows Wednesday’s directive that requires wearing a face mask in public.
