One of the biggest landlords in New York City just finished a contest to generate ideas that could make its thousands of apartments more cost effective to operate.

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) could use the help. Proposals in Washington, D.C. could cut billions from NYCHA’s budget. Every penny the agency can save will be needed.

NYCHA and the Mayor’s Office of Technology and Innovation put out two “Calls for Innovation.” The winning proposals include technologies such as high-efficiency steam heat exchangers, web-enabled radiator valves, and smart air conditioner controllers/sensors.

NYCHA will now test the technology in pilot programs. “The successes of these pilots will be amplified by the scale of NYCHA, the nation’s largest residential landlord and public housing authority, and help establish markets for these technologies in New York City,” Bomee Jung, vice president of Energy and Sustainability for NYCHA.
