New York City officials announced their success in creating new land for development — by cleaning up toxic land.

“We are cleaning up vacant lots and revitalizing neighborhoods across the city, and hitting our goals a year-and-a-half ahead of schedule,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Since 2014, redevelopment to tough standards set by New York State has cleared toxins from 138 acres at 500 City-owned sites, ranging from lead and asbestos to more hazardous chemicals, including the removal of 300 often-leaking underground storage tanks and tons of poisons.

The remediated land has been redeveloped with over 27 million square feet of new building space.
