New Science Facility Underway at UC San Diego
UC San Diego broke ground on a new seven-story, 128,000-square-foot Biological Physical Sciences Building. The facility will support research and teaching, including programs focusing on human health and the environment, housed within a flexible laboratory building.
Lower floors include biology and chemistry teaching labs, as well as learning studios and classrooms. The building features a nationally-recognized Nuclear Magnetic Resonance core facility, a 175-seat auditorium dedicated to research symposia, and post-doctorate and faculty offices.
The building will feature energy-efficient equipment and fixtures, a condensate recovery system, and drought resistant landscaping. The sustainability efforts are expected to result in a 45% reduction in water use. The building anticipates LEED Silver certification.
Los Angeles-based CO Architects designed the facility that is expected to open in June 2018.
